When I got invited to //Orkut by you know who; I thought it was interesting in a "6 degrees of separation" kind of way but that in itself was not enough to keep me interested. It needed an application. Molly wood (bolly/holly....?) lists her //5 reasons the social networks sites don't work..
Strangers kind of suck (or, put nicely, the social hierarchy is really not that attractive)
I don't completly agree with her but she has some good points. My view is that Social Networking sites need to add more value than the cost to maintain it and the value of an online view of your social network on the Orkuts, Friendsters etc is too low. //Linkedin offers mgre "business" value and they try to keep the cost of maintaining the network very low by offering outlook integration. //Getoutfoxed may be another way of adding value...but we need the //Web2.0!! to maintain the networks..an easy way of bringing the cost down is by avoiding duplication..FOAF perhaps?
