Twitter Identity Management, accident waiting to happen

I love twitter, sometimes I can not post as much as I would like to. But I am a long term heavy user and you can follow me if you can read Dutch and think I write sensible stuff every now and then. And I wil return by following you.

One of the great ways that twitter is used is in ways the twitter staff could not predict but only could facilitate by openening up the API's. Other sites can for example twet on behalf of you. For example, that you voted on Obama, put an RSS feed of your flickr account via a webservice to twitter to share it with your followers, etc.

The problem is that all these service need your userid and password to post on behalf of you of your twitter account. And here is the source of a big problem. Maybe the website you are using does not (need) to save your userid/password combination. Maybe they do. Maybe the service is safe and others will never be able to get your password via a hack. Maybe the owner of the site will never go bad and post on behalf of others. Maybe the service will not change its' Terms and Condidtions overnight so they can put adds in your tweets. And maybe you are using strong passwords for all your accounts that are not the same, so the webservice can not your gmail? Maybe.

But I am sure we will see an ugly accident in the near future, people are almost used to the fact that you should type in your userid and password in a popup box and as long as the password is not echo-ed on the screen but hidden with "****" it is safe to use that service.

are passionate about the best CMS out there
know some 5 people who are as well
want to make name in the Drupal community
have more time spare then you have spare

PLEASE consider to step forward and send a (detailed) report to the Drupal Association where you apply for organizing the next DrupalCon in North or South America.

We really /really/ can use a group of persons that will help the community, the Drupal ecosphere and themselves by stepping up to become bigger then themselves by being dedicated to make the best DrupalCon even better!

What we need from you:

The number of people that are able and willing to work for a period of 6 month more then 8 hours per week to organize this DrupalCon.
A venue that can hold between 600-800 people with a main hall that can hold these people and 3 other rooms (all with good facilities like WiFi, video and audio) as well as some BoF rooms.
A small plan regarding the schedule. How many days? Tracks for business? Development? End-users?
A budget. Do not focus on breaking even, do not focus on sponsors, focus on the cost per attendee for different scenario's.

If you submit this plan to the board within the next two or three weeks, the Drupal Association can look at it and vote for the best candidate. If they choose you, be prepared for eternal Drupal Fame!

Hoe de Volkskrant haar wikipedia entry censureert

Wat doe je als bedrijf als er informatie staat op het internet die je niet bevalt? Je kan de andere kant opkijken, dreigen met rechtzaken of het gewoon recht zetten! En zeker met wikipedia is dat nog eenvoudig ook.

Dus als er op de grootste en beste online encyclopedie iets staat over je bedrijf dat je niet bevalt, dan kan je het gewoon veranderen. Edit de pagina en hup... het is weg. En je staat weer schoon op het internet.

Echt weg? Nee, Wiki heeft een revisie systeem. Dus je kan revisies inzien, ongedaan maken en meer dan dat, zien welk IP adres of welke user welke teksten heeft geschreven of weggehaald. Een mooi open systeem waarbij moderatie mogelijk is en anonimiteit geminimaliseerd.

Zullen we eens kijken naar de wikipedia entry van De Volkskrant? Een mooie pagina, netjes bijgewerkt en met zinvolle informatie. Maar wat gebeurt er als we naar de revisies kijken? Een lange lijst van mensen en mensen achter IP addressen die de entry bewerkt hebben.

Nu was ik zo'n 10 jaar geleden een "netmaster", iemand die het internet "beheert", de routering verzorgt en/of ontwerpt. En dat laatste heb ik gedaan voor mijn huidige werkgever, een mooie schaalbarer nieuwe internet infrastructuur geschapen met een /16 (klasse B voor mensen die denken IP te begrijpen maar niet doen); 145.222.0.0/16.

En die reeks stellen wij ter gebruik aan onze klanten.

Dus toen ik 145.222.138.35 in de lijst van revisies over De Volkskrant zag staan, wist ik direct, dat is het uitgaande IP adres waarachter PCM en dus de Volkskrant zit. Verdacht, het is zeer tegen de wikipedia etiquette in om je eigen Bio of bedrijf te gaan bewerken, zoals Adam Curry ook the hard way ontdektte.

Dus, de Volkskrant edit haar eigen entry op wikipedia. Zullen we maar even kijken?
Wat links toegevoegd, wat informatie verbeterd. Prima. Maar heee, plotseling is een groot deel van de tekst weggehaald OVER de Volkskrant DOOR de Volkskrant:

De krant raakte betrokken bij het grote auteursrechtenschandaal van PCM. De uitgeverij was zonder instemming of medeweten van de freelancers van de krant begonnen hun werk verder te exploiteren in [[Persdatabank]], wat na bezwaren en langdurige rechtzaken resulteerde in een schadevergoeding van 3 miljoen euro (voor alle PCM-dagbladen samen). De Volkskrant heeft een zwarte lijst ingericht van de freelancers, die aan die procedure hebben meegewerkt en die weigeren hun artikelen gratis ter beschikking te stellen voor digitale exploitatie.

Beet! Een behoorlijk deel negatieve tekst weggehaald door de Volkskrant. Ik weet natuurlijk niet of het waar is wat er stond. Aantijgingen over een "zwartboek" van journalisten die in de ban zijn, zijn redelijk zwaar en moeten op wikipedia gestaafd worden om te blijven staan. Maar het weghalen hiervan zonder overleg en hiermee wegkomen, DOOR de Volkskrant OVER de Volkskrant klinkt wel heel erg als censuur.

Ik denk helemaal niet dat het tijd is voor een nieuwe ethiek voor journalisten en media. Ik denk dat de oude ethiek ook voor oude media in nieuwe channels opgaat.

Hoor, wederhoor. Eer, geweten. Open, eerlijk. Schrijf, Blijf.

De Volkskrant -druk met haar navel ethiek was alleen even vergeten dat Schrijf/Blijf online maakt dat je ook kan zien WIE WAT geschreven heeft. En dat blijft.

De Volkskrant censureert haar eigen Wikipedia Entry!

NB: ik zal andere bedrijven ook gaan volgen en bloggen over hoe zij haar wikipedia entries proberen op te schonen. Dit is dus de eerste aus die reihe: "Nederlandse sok-poppen op navel-Wikipedia". Dus andere media, prima om hierover te berichten maar kijk wel even naar je eigen geschiedenis op wikipedia!

NB2: Oooh, Oooh. Wat zijn ze leuk bij PCM (waarschijnlijk NRC!) Vak10 van Ajax heeft een Darkroom, Hoogeveen is een metropool en PCM heeft een IP ban.

(disclaimer: PCM en dus de Volkskrant is een grote klant van mijn werkgever en ik kom er vaak en graag over de vloer. Maar als ik een smerige vloer zie, dan zeg ik dat ook.)

Today I'll by getting my new passport. I orded a new one now because I dont want to have a new passport with a RFID chip in it. No, I am not wearing a tinfoil hat, but I do think that carrying a digital identity along with me, "broadcasting" my whereabouts to every reader in the world is something I want.

Vroeger als ik een verhaal hield over OpenSource software gaf ik graag als voorbeeld hoe stemcomputers werken. Namelijk via gesloten software. Terwijl we wetten hebben met welke kleur potlood we analoog moeten stemmen, de stemmen geteld worden en weer geteld en een recount altijd mogelijk is, hebben we bij digitale keuze een blackbox uit een bevriende (maar vreemde) natie, Israel.

Het rare is, mensen bleken mijn voorbeeld van waarom open source noodzakelijk is niet te begrijpen. Men vindt het helemaal niet boeiend of de source van een stemcomputer openbaar is of niet; of het proces auditable is, de uitslag reproduceerbaar en het resultaat transparant. Men begreep mijn voorbeeld niet; waarom zou je de source van een stemcomputer willen inkijken.

Natuurlijk heb ik het voorbeeld niet van mijzelf (denk ik althans), vele anderen hebben het eerder bedacht en doen er ook wat aan:

Er was eens een land waar de bevolking zijn leiders koos door op de verkiezingsdag in een stemhokje een vakje rood te kleuren op een groot stuk papier. Tienduizenden burgers van dit land zaten op die dag in stembureaus door het hele land en zagen er op toe dat de verkiezingen eerlijk verliepen.

Ik denk dat ik maar meedoe. En 22/11 even zeiken. Plast u mee? En draag wel een zwart shirt dat past.

Take a look at this map of the earth and play with the drpdown menu that indicated the rise of the sealevel. Two countries stand out, one being the Netherlands. If the sealevel rises 4 meters, I should just be able to keep dry feet. Thanks the Dutch for the dykes...

New Scientist Stealth sharks to patrol the high seas, rather scary

Engineers funded by the US military have created a neural implant designed to enable a shark's brain signals to be manipulated remotely, controlling the animal's movements, and perhaps even decoding what it is feeling.

No matter how often I see "friendly sharks" over at the Disco channel, as a kid of the 70ies I have seens Jaws and will never come close to anything shark alike.

Despite this limitation [it is very easy to exhaust them], though, remote controlled sharks do have advantages that robotic underwater surveillance vehicles just cannot match: they are silent, and they power themselves.

I will be flying shortly to have some R&R. So it is a perfect timing to see pictures like these Plane struck by lightning imagery

The images below show an aircraft being affected by a lightning flash. To the authors knowledge, nobody on the plane was injured. It is unknown if the aircraft experienced any damage. According to the scientist who acquired this imagery, the airplane itself triggered the lightning discharge.
