Somehwo I always manage to screw stuff up. The other day I connected my iPhone to my Mac and it fired up -as it should- iTunes. However, iTunes told me that I should "activate my iPhone or that the SIM was damaged". I have a jailbroken iPhone and a fine SIM card, rebooting the iPhone "solved" the problem. However, it triggered something else that I only found out days later; the Youtube application still was not activated and tol me when I started it

And then the application stopped. It seems that this is "normal" behaviour when you unlock your phone with ziPhone. However, I jailbroke my iPhone with iNdependence and it has been working fine for month.

The solution for ZiPhone users worked for me as well however. Some say that installing a "YouTube fix" program via the installer application will work, it did not for me. But all you have to do is copy three files to your iPhone, even if you do not know anything about UNIX an easy task.

Just download these threefiles. Start a SFTP client on your machine, copy the files in /var/root/Library/Lockdown to your desktop for backup reasons and copy the three files you downloaded to the same location. The userid to do this with is "root", the password "alpine".

Worked for me, I can use the Youtube application again, thanks to macriot!

Drupal as a Home Service Bus (beyond Home Automation)

If... If I would start my own company... But I won't. I do not have the skills, money, balls and most of all, I am rather happy with my current employer Dutch Open Projects. But if I would start my own company, the services would not be based upon Location Based Services, a carbon copy of free available software or "Social Networking two dot ooo". It would be based upon my hobby in combination with my "vision"

Part of my (IT) related hobby's include Drupal (the best Content Management System), MythTv (the best way to watch less junk TV) and everything Mac related (the best way to communicate with a CPU).

Combining these elements will give you nice opportunities. For example your iPhone could be your remote control for your telly:

But you could also use your iPhone as a device to watch television on; recorded streaming television based upon your preferences towards your telehone!

And these are just two simple examples; it could be expanded to controlling and integrating the Squeezebox (cheesy: WiFi to your HiFi) I own and towards all the other electric equipment in my house with X.10 (cheesy: control your house from your mouse) like Mr House does. But you will directly see two problems; all these devices and software packages act like they are the master:

they do not talk to each other
they do not provide a nice consistent user interface

In fact, most of the user interfaces these devices provide are really really bad, if you think Drupal pre4 sucked usability wise, try a MythTV distro from one year a go or even the current version of MrHouse! Now the time might not be right for my "business plan". I know that in the USA the concept of Tivo is rather normal for early adapters but here in the EU harddisk based PVR's are just catching on. It will take some time before the public sees and needs that these devices should be integrated .And by that time I am sure that our friends from RedMond have a very nice "solution" for you; "Vista Home Automation # 1984".

By not combining, not integrating, they do not give the user the option to co-related information about their house. For example, if my central system that my family would not be in the house since there are no blue-tooth telephones detected at 2:00h in the morning while the camera sensors motion, I would like to be paged, see the camera images from my iPhone and when I will not react within a certain amount of time, the system should dial out to the police. Okay, bad example, I do not want that since most likely I forgot my phone or the battery is dead and I am in the kitchen to make some milk for my son to get him to sleep. But you get the idea; a centralised place where information is gathered from multiple sources, co-related and with work-flow, action upon this information.

And by not combining, not integrating, they do not provide the user with a good user interface that is consistent and adapts (context aware) towards the client (text messaging, instant messaging, telephone, full browser etc). A key factor forsuccess beyond the usual geeks.

I would like to be able to solve these two problems, make a central place that talks to all devices and can be "smart" and provide the user with the best UI (s)he can get. Now before you state that there is such a product, I am aware of pluto. Pluto combines music (squeezeboxes), television (MythTV), voice (asterisk) and much more into a central box. See for more information their (nasal!) presentation. But they do not combine it in what I would call a "central smart box". That and the fact that they can use some competition :-)

A central smart box would be able to adapt fast, if there would be an API for a grocery shop, it will be in the software in the box within days, weeks. It would know my spending habits and my income and would swap money to places where it would get the most interest, it would read my RSS feeds and based upon time and location "read" them to me, it would know my agenda and the availability of my friends and it would do so much more that I can think of right now.

And by now, you should see why I would like to add my other hobby; Drupal. I think that a central system that acts upon actions and can do more then that could be a Content management Framework like Drupal. I know that PHP by nature would not be very good for acting as a real time broker between information, but I still would go for a Drupal solution instead of J2EE. Drupal is easier, it adapts way faster, can integrate, has a geeky loving community that probably has some of the devices I mentioned, can look beautiful, has a very small footprint and can be context aware.

I would like coin the phrase Home Service Bus, after the Enterprise Service Bus. More the Home Automation that enables a user to control electronic elements, it would be able to make decisions on its own, based upon input from my actions and the status of electronics devices. It would be a broker of information; it would be a Home Service Bus! Now let's just wait until the Gartner People catch up on this phrase in half a decade :-)

So, if I would start my own company it would be based on building this. But since I will not, you a free to make it. And -lazy as I am- I will buy it from you!

Intellectueel Eigendom in blog land. Complexe materie.. Een zaak waar je als leek in feite niet mee moet bemoeien als mag je natuurlijk een mening hebben. Meningen heb ik genoeg dus laat ik mijn duit in het zakje doen over een recente zaak die in de Nederlandse blogosphere haar kop op stak.

Marketingfacts heeft een stukje over een Nederlandse weblogger Cinner die een stuk integraal had over genomen van de NRC. Vervolgens zou een bedrijf in opdracht van de auteur haar "beboet" hebben met 500 Euro. Zie een aantal postings in deze van de originele blogger hier.

Ik heb er niet bij stil gestaan - en vele webloggers met mij denk ik - dat het hier een schending betrof.

Dit is typerend voor de huidige generatie. CD’s koop je niet maar download je en mensen denken dat dit legaal is. Ja het downloaden wellicht wel maar het bezit niet. En teksten schrijf je wel maar je gebruikt de kracht van een ander om het beter te maken. Typerend, niet goed of slecht perse. Maar wel typerend. We leven in een tijd waarin iedereen denkt of vindt dat informatie vrij moet zijn. Maar voornamelijk informatie van anderen, als je eigen postings ergens anders staan vindt men het wel een schande en staat de blogoshere op zijn kop. "Unilever gebruikt een CC not for commercial use foto van Flick in haar reclame campagne!" is een headline die eenvoudig op honderden blogs zou kunnen eindigen. Copyright wel voor "ons" maar niet voor "hun". Het feit dat je online eenvoudig hergebruik kan maken van de content van een ander maakt niet dat je het ook mag!

Intellectueel Eigendom in blog land. Complexe materie. In de blog posting van zowel about blank als het doorgaans zeer goede marketingfacts wordt gemeld dat de weblogger beboet is. Vanzelfsprekend is er maar een autoriteit die boetes kan uit delen, de rechtelijke macht. Niet een bedrijf als cozzmoss met een zwaar heersende FRAMES webiste in 2007. Cozzmoss kan natuurlijk wel eisen dat een stuk wordt weggehaald. ALS ze rechthebbende is of een rechthebbende vertegenwoordigd. Strik genomen kan ze het altijd eisen maar dat is nietig of vernietigbaar. En als ik het stuk op cinner goed lees, was Cozzmoss die de schrijver van het stuk uit de NRC vertegenwoordigde, niet PcM of NRC zelf. Dit is het eerste opmerkelijke feit. Het kan zijn dat de situatiue veranderd is, maar tot voor kort wouden de kranten van PcM altijd eigenaar zijn van de stukjes die in de krant staan, ook de stukjes van freelanchers, ook voor media anders dan de dode bomen ("krant") variant. Daar is vroeger een redelijke grote rechtzaak over geweest waar PcM liever niet meer aan herinnerd wordt en online probeert te wissen (zie ook mijn blog posting over PcM censureert haar eigen wikiperia lemma).

Stel dat het bedrijf in kwestie (het zwaar achterlijke cozzmoss) acteert namens de auteur. Dan is het nog steeds zeer waarschijnlijk een leeg dreigement want die auteur is zeer waarschijnlijk helemaal geen eigenaar van het stukje maar de NRC/PcM is de eigenaar. Cozzmoss noch de auteur kunnen dus eisen dat een stuk wordt weggehaald, althans die kan is zeer groot!

Wie zit achter cozzmoss? De WHOIS database zegt:

Googlen naar Procez Deloranch levert niet veel op maar bladzijde2 is goed door te nemen. Een raar bedrijf van mevrouw Irene van den Berg. Een leek (freelanch schrijfster) met een zeer bedenkelijke manier van inkomsten deling en zwakke juridische basis. Als ik auteur was zou ik zeker niet met haar in zee gaan.

Er was geen mailtje van de auteur met het verzoek het artikel (wat diep in het archief zat en nooit meer werd opgevraagd) te verwijderen.

Een rare constatering. Voor de meeste webloggers geldt dat 90% van het bezoek van een search engine komt en niet naar de voorpagina gaat maar naar het archief. Tenzij enkel je moeder, je oma en een geheime aanbidder je voorpagina volgen en je CMS niet de mogelijkheid heeft om permalinks te gebruiken en data van goede metadata te voorzien. "Ver weggestopt” geldt voor offline publicaties, op pagina 10 staat minder belangrijk nieuws dan op pagina een. Maar het geldt niet online, zeker niet voor weblogs.

Laten we de zaak nog eens ingewikkelder maken. Stel dat de weblogger in kwestie niet het artikel manueel had gekopieerd maar via een RSS feed geautomatiseerd had ingelezen van de NRC site. En stel dat de NRC een full nieuwsfeed zou geven en niet slechts een teaser (ankeiler in oud uitgeversland genoemd). En stel dat de RSS feed lezer die op de website van de blogger zou staan niet zou "purgen" maar alle artikelen uit de feed zou opslaan in "het archief". Zou het dan nog steeds een copyright schending zijn? Enkel de techniek is anders (RSS versus HTML) en de manier van importeren (automatisch versus manueel bewust). Ik ben benieuwd wat een rechter daarvan zou vinden.

Webloggers die schrijven over webloggers –en dat ben ik ook- hebben te weinig kennis van deze materie. Woorden als "boete", "verweggestopt in het archief" zijn zinloos
Het is maar de vraag of het dubieuze bedrijf Cozzmoss de rechthebbende vertegenwoordigt
We kunnen als blogoshere allemaal het artikel in kwestie een op een plaatsen op onze blog. Kijken wat er dan gaat beuren? Wat zijn uw gedachten in deze?

Hoe ik twitter uitvond, 6 jaar geleden...

Twitter is een ... wel multimediaal microblog tool. Ik weet niet of dat voor mensen die onbekend met dergelijke materie zijn, de boel duidelijker maakt. Het is een soort SMS die je naar vrienden stuurt die zelf kunnen kiezen via welk kanaal ze het terug sturen/ontvangen, via een instant messaging client, via een SMSje, via het web en er komen vast nieuwe dragers aan. Microblogging dus (SMS) via meerdere media (web, SMS, instnat messaging) En dat gecombineerd met sociale netwerken, je kan communiceren met vrinden of je subscriben op feeds van bijvoorbeeld websites. En zo kan je bijvoorbeeld zien wat ik aan het doen ben (soms )

Zo'n 7 jaar geleden kreeg mijn huidige werkgever een klant die nog in de dotcom tijd leeft, vizzavi, nu een redirect naar Vodafone. Ook toen de dotbomb al lang gevallen was bleven ze geld verbranden alsof het 1999 was. Helaas deden we "enkel" het systeem beheer voor deze klant en praten we niet met "de business", daar waren de heeren van accenture voor die werkelijk meerdere jachten en autos aan bonus per peroon als partner hebben binnen gesleept. Ik was dus niet in de gelegenheid om goede idee-en (althans IMHO) op het juiste niveau voor het voetlicht te brengen.

Ik heb in 2001 ooit Vizzavi (een telco die in de web hype was gestort) het idee aan de hand gedaan om niet enkel te bloggen (dat was toen redelijk nieuw) maar om dat ook te doen via SMS, zie de posting uit 2002 die ik hier over schreef:

...maak het mogelijk dat al die tieners met hun mobiel via sms hun blog live in de klas kunnen updaten (ik heb duits. en de leraar stinkt uit zijn mond. nou, doei!). net zo waardevol als mijn blog entries maar wel veel sms verkeer, hetgeen redelijk veel geld oplevert. ik bedoel, echt iedereen blogt en heeft een mobiel, je authentificatie kan met CLID...

In 2003 heb ik er nogmaals over geschreven.

Okay, ik heb twitter niet uitgevonden, niet eens in de buurt. De title is dus niet waar en is enkel prikkelend bedoeld. Ik dacht enkel aan web en SMS. Niet aan netwerken, niet aan jabber (instant messaging), niet aan TinyURL, niet aan het creeren van een buzz. Maar we zaten nog in het web1.2 tijdperk. En eerlijk gezegd -ik claim geen credits- is dat wat ik voor ogen had qua kwaliteit wel wat twitter is geworden: ik heb duits. en de leraar stinkt uit zijn mond. nou, doei!. Veel meer qua inhoud zijn de meeste twitter entries niet.

Twitter, ben nog steeds benieuwd of het een voorbijgaand iets is of iets dat geintegreerd -want op zicht zelf is het echt niet goed genoeg- een meerwaarde biedt. Google die Heiku -een vergelijkbare dienst als twitter- kocht heeft daar vast meer visie over dan ik heb...

Yahoo's Pipe service is realy great. You can build a webservices with webservices via a drop and drag interface that feels so naturally it feels like you are running a native application. I couldnt believe this was done in HTML/Ajax/DHTML/buzzword. It *really* feels like a native application.

So I played with it a bit and within a couple of minutes I made a "webservice" that searches for "Drupal" content from

(note: the Google search isnt working since Google blocks automated searches But I have it in just in case they get it.)

See it in action at My Pipes.Y! (Y! account needed but you want one to play with Pipes, believe me it is worth the email address!) Play with it here, make it better and share your service. The result is online as well and you can import it as RSS in your feedreader. Never miss anything from Yahoo!, EBay or Flickr again mentioning the word "Drupal".

Tim can stop defining "Web 2.0" and just point towards this pipe site; easy, rich application, mashups, RSS, hell take one buzzword 2.0 and see if that doesnt fit in this pipes.

If the Internet is not a big truck. And it is not "a series of tubes.", it is pipes! And we are plumbing!

Als senior architect technische infrastructuur open-source software draag je de verantwoordelijkheid voor het eigen project en ben je bezig met het ontwerpen van architecturale uitgangspunten. Ook ben je verantwoordelijk voor projectoverstijgende zaken, zoals het beoordelen van andere projecten, het ontwikkelen van een visie over open-source software en het begeleiden van je teamleden.

Gaat het dan toch nog goedkomen met open source en de overheid? Wel jammer dat alles tegenwoordig een "architect" heet te zijn (en ja dat is ook een titel van mij geweest). Het feit dat men Linux (suse of redhat) certificering wil, HBO denkniveau en een salaris onder de 4k per maand maakt dat ik hier niet voor ga. Maar wellicht iets voor jou?

Wordt je eerste taak het stoppen van martelen van de browser en server met een foute MSFT site.

Upgraded to Fedora Core 5

I just upgraded this site from Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 5. The slow machine and slow CD made the process take a couple of hours but (nearly) everything worked fine directly after the upgrade. I saw in the logging that Sendmail wasnt starting up so that is something I'll take a look at later

And my website wasnt working. But that was easy fixed. Drupal is not a memory hog but installede with some modules, it wont run in 8MB of PHP memory

So switching to "a bit" more made this work:

[root@tug conf]# grep -i memory_limit /etc/php.ini

memory_limit = 64M      ; added by bb after upgrade from fc4 to 5

The I could see the homepage of this site but other links ("clean URL's") were not working. This was solved fast as well, allowoveride all in httpd.conf and done. So all in all after the machine rebooted, it took me less then 10 minutes to solve all things.

I had lots of "OOO-MEM" problems running fc4 so I hope some of these are solved now resulting in a higer uptime (that should be easy doable :- )

I also installed a new opcode cache from the man (Rasmus) himself, APC. This will help to reduce the load I hop on this poor machine that during spamruns went through the roof (think 60+!)

pecl install apc

Add the 'extension=apc.so' to PHP.ini
And did a httpd restart (yes, APC shows up in phpinfo!)

Now back to this sendmail thingy... Or maybe later... mail not getting send can wait

My new hardware list for my PVR

After my last try to get some hardware together for my PVR, I did another try at computerland.nl. And this is the list I came up with. I did a downpayment 2 days ago, so I hope I'll have my system within 2 or 3 days. Apart from a good service with computerland, I also managed to get some 60 euro's of the bill, just by asking ;-)

Hardware

This is the list of stuff bought:

Case/Motherboard: Shuttle 8500 G4

A nice shuttle barebonbe with some cool Specs (PDF)

Processor: AMD Sempron 2600 64 bits

Tuner card: Hauppauge Win-TV-PVR 500 MCE

A very nice card. A bit young, so Linux support is flanky and one needs newer beta drivers. The 150/250 seem to be more mature. However, it has hardware MPEG encoding and has two (!) tunercards and a FM card

Videocard: ASUS v9520-X/TD, 128 MB

The main reason for this card is, that is has "Nvidia GeForce FX5200" chipset, very old and well suported by the Linux community. It also has TV-out and DVI-I, good choice.

Harddisk: Maxtor 300GB 16 MB, SATA II

SATA II even!

Memory: DIMM 512 MB PC 3200 DDR Nanya

"512 MB ought to be enough for everyone"

DVD: NEC ND3550 Dual Layer +/- R/ RW
