Hi. It’s Daniel. .. Daniel. Of the marketing department? We met.. Never mind.. Listen. Listen up. Are you listening? Sit down. Listen, I have a great idea. Great I tell you. You know we have 20 sites to run. Yep, twenty already. And we do this.. with. Eric counts as well.. 8 people. A staff of eight running twentie sites. And what is missing..? Well.. Yes? Indeed!

Our editors need to be able to work when they are in the field as well, on the road. Indeed. Yep, you guessed it right. A native App! Download from the AppStore. A native app I tell you, so our editors can write when they are in the field. Now listen, it is a great idea. John and Steven are on iOS.. yes, both using an iPhone. And Lisa always has an Android.. Don't know why.. And then we have Peter who has bad eyes and used the New iPad. Brian is still on Windows. Why can't we fire him..? Paul has a Mac. So we need to make.. Let me see, been a long day. Ooh, wait Eric is on that penguin thing.. Yes Linux is what he calls it. Well forget about Eric, we can't support everything.

So we have to make 20 apps, for every site one. Time two mobile OS-es, one optimized for the iPad. One windows and a mac. So 20 times 5. Say, we have to make 100 applications. Yes that is a lot. But think about the advantages. If they want to edit an article, all they have to do is open an application. Because -and this is the beauty of my concept- it is in fact using HTTP as a protocol from the application to the website. See? We just use what is already there; the protocol. Smart hu?

What. What? What you do mean we don't want to build and maintain 100 silos? Why are you calling it silos... It aren't silos? I think you don't understand. It are apps! APPS. Native Apps. Yes I know we will be launching 3 new websites. Ooh, Steven switched to Windows Mobile.. ?

Why do you keep calling this silos? You didn't call it “a silo” when we launched 20 apps for our Android users and 20 for our iOS use... You did? ooh, but still.. What do you mean can't support? What is this with change management you keep saying. Yes, I know our 20 websites have a CMS where you can change data and functionality live for all our users. So, what is so bad that we wait a month or two before Apple.. Yes, I listen.. There IS already an app for that? Great, why didn't you tell marketing? There is an app for using our websites on mobile. Now you tell me.... So, where can I download it... What already on my device? An app for that called.. a browser?

I thought this was funny. Extend New York, at ExtendNy.com where the grid of NY is used all over the world and you can find where you are located. In my case, I am at NY 68,024 st / 10,749 ave (note the comma's :-). The gris itself dates way back, see the plan of 1811.

And we all know that it should be the other way around: New York traces its roots to its 1624 founding as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic, and was named New Amsterdam in 1626, since the Dutch bought the land for 60 guilders.

Ahh well. I like it better the way it is now. Just so we dont have rich words like "moederneuker" on our language.

Volksvertegenwoordiging en de ziekte van PVV-pleps

Het schuim komt boven drijven. Triest te zien, maar universele wet dat de lichtste van geest gaat drijven. Normaal iets wat je afroomt en je doorgaat met de dagelijkse gang van zaken, maar helaas in onze nieuwe werkelijkheid van Den Haag niet meer aan de orde.

Als het land al ziek is, dan uit zich dat in Den Haag. Daar zijn we de verkoudheid intussen voorbij en liggen we aan de beademing. Het ziektebeeld in retroperspectief.

Het begon allemaal met de Ziekte van LPF.

De uitslag (LPF-er slaat fotograaf) van de testen waren nog maar een voorbode. Krap 7 uur na installatie bleek Philomena Bijlhout aan geheigenverlies te leiden, ze was vergeten dat ze in uniform meewerkte na de decembermoorden aan de dictatuur Bouterse. Een vorm van amnesie die we vaker tegen komen bij dit type. Voor 7 uur "werk" natuurlijk wel jarenlang wachtgeld ontvangen, dat deel was ze niet vergeten.

De ziekte van LPF is terminaal. Dus toen de LPF onder "De Puinhopen van Pleps" begraven was, begon de PVV te kuchen. Eerst kreeg men last van de knie-en: (http://www.volkskrant.nl/vk/nl/2664/Nieuws/article/detail/862137/2007/05/30/Wilders-schieten-op-relschoppers.dhtml">... en vervolgens gericht op de benen mikken van relschoppers.. De ziekte van democratie. Waar het geweer groter is dan het mondelinge verweer.

Toen kreeg men een druiper waarmee brievenbussen vol werden geplast. En ook het geheugenverlies trad al vrij snel op: als leraar door de politie de klas (mavo, niet VWO) uitgezet.

Ach, de PVV wil harder straffen. Zou ik niet doen, er zit voor maar liefst voor 50 jaar celstraf op het pluche in den Haag te schuimen namens de PVV.

Uit de categorie klassieker van kunde, meneer de Mos die wel even de kamer uitlegt met zijn "My-Fits-Kerncentrale"-kunde hoe het werkelijk zit

(btw: de Mos, je bent een beetje stil de laatste tijd. Blijkt dat de rijzende zon iets te veel straalt?)

Dit zit dus in de kamer. Dit vertegenwoordigt U en mij. Het is het schuim van het allerlaagste allooi dat omhoog komt en mee deint op kringspier van onderkant van de samenleving.

En nu: Nu is de uiterste besmettelijke ziekte van de LPF, overgebracht door de PVV zelfs bij een normale partij als de VVD aangekomen. De VVD kucht, zucht, gaat door de knie-en (liberale koopzondag), het linker hersenhelftl is al een tijdje afgestorven (persoonsgebonden budget) en nu lijkt ook de rest het niet meer te doen.

Renee Leegte (what is in a name) heeft namelijk een LOI cursus astrologie gedaan en weet nu dat de aarde niet opwarmt, dit tegen 99% van alle wetenschappers in:

Het meteorologisch instituut KNMI moet worden opgeheven als overheidsorganisatie, wil coalitiepartij VVD. Het weerinstituut is namelijk partijdig, stelt VVD-Kamerlid René Leegte.

Volgt u dit? Het KNMI afschaffen omdat 20% iets zou zeggen wat 99% van de wetenschappers denkt en wat je als politicus niet wil horen. De brengers van het weer afschavven omdat ze partijdig zijn? Whats next?

Kema afschaffen omdat ze een stekker van een terrasverwarming hebben afgekeurd? Linkse hobby!

De ronde van Venlo opdoeken omdat ze de wielklassieker Rondje om de Kerk niet rechtsom willen doen maar linksom blijven gaan? Linkse kerk!

Rechters ontslaan omdat ze anders recht spreken dan je wil? Militairen die links zijn in rang naar beneden zetten? Is dat wat het schuim wil? Wil het schuim terug naar die periode?

Van mij mag een ieder stemmen wat je wil. Van mij mag een ieder in de kamer. Maar ik zou het erg prettig vinden als het schuim van den Haag zich qua IQ aan de rechterzijde van de IQ/Bell curve zou bevinden. Niet omdat deze kant oververtegenwoordigd moet zijn, maar omdat deze kant betere beslissingen neemt. Een volksvertegenwoordiging is niet een volksafspiegeling!

Pleps naar Links, leiders naar Rechts. En dat graag binnen een normale partij als de VVD.

disclaimer: ja een zuur stukje. maar het is een blog. en ja ik weet dat links en rechts even erg zijn in deze. maar rechts haalt wel duidelijk in. en nee, het is niet hautain bedoeld, van mij mag iedereen in de kamer maar liefst wel als je iets slimmer bent dan gemiddeld en iets weet van waar je over spreekt

Hoe ik Twitter uitvond....

Hoe ik twitter uitvond. Linkbait titel maar wil verhaal er achter vertellen.

Elk congres waar ik kom, elke klant die ik zie, hoor ik wel een verhaal over hoe iemand een geweldige bestaande dienst 10 jaar eerder heeft uitgevonden. Dus over hoe iemand 8 jaar geleden foursquare verzon "maar te vroeg was". Of over hoe iemand twitter eigenlijk gemaakt had, maar de markt nog niet rijp is. Ook ik, ik heb het internet nog niet uitgevonden, maar wel twitter.

In 2001 ging ik naar een klant die actief was op het gebied van "portal" en mobiel integratie en legde hem voor hoe korte status meldingen verstuurd zouden kunnen worden via mobiel en getoond op "de portal". In 2002 besloot ik -toen klant niet op in ging- het te bloggen, zie deze posting:

Creeren een blog space voor end users of een connectie naar een blog space en maak het mogelijk dat al die tieners met hun mobiel via sms hun blog live in de klas kunnen updaten (ik heb duits. en de leraar stinkt uit zijn mond. nou, doei!).

Het voorbeeld ("de leraar stinkt uit zijn mond") maakt dat iedereen er wel de kwaliteit van Tweets in dit voorbeeld kan zien :-) In 2003 schreef ik er nogmaals over. In 2003 bestond twitter nog niet, maar werd er al wel met "microblogging" geexperimenteerd.

Goede ideeen worden op heel veel plekken ter gelijke tijd uitgevonden. Sterker nog, het is mijn stelling dat als je iets uitvindt wat niet bestaat in een vorm, dat je je zorgen moet maken. Maar het gaat niet om het bedenken van iets nieuws, dat is eenvoudig. Ik en vele anderen worden in hun hoofd gehinderd door het hebben van duizenden ideee-en. Maar de hinder is dat we er niets mee doen, omdat het volgende idee er aan komt. Het gaat er om dat je het ook daadwerkelijk bouwt en daadwerkelijk tot succes kan maken. De rest is borrel praat.

En meer dan dat, het gaat er om dat je iets kan bouwen wat op meer en andere manieren gebruikt kan worden. In een goed boek kan je meer of iets anders lezen dan de auteur voor ogen had. In een slcht boek volg je de gedachtes van de auteur.

In een goede tool kan je op andere manieren gebruik maken van de functionaliteit, anders dan dat de bouwer voor ogen had. In een slecht tool, doe je wat anderen doen. Juist het aanpassen van de bouwer van de tool naar de nieuwe mogelijkheden, is de kracht van de tool en de bouwer. Twitter heeft vele vormen gekend voordat ze is geworden wat ze nu is, omdat mensen het anders gebruikte dan de bouwers hadden bedacht. Hashtags, RT's maar ook hoe mobiel / SMS en bijvoorbeeld chat integratie werkte, was vroeger heel anders op twitter.

Mijn punt is niet dat ik twitter uitvond. Iedereen weet dat Al Gore twitter heeft uitgevonden. Maar wel:

Focus is de sleutel, leveren is goud. Het gaat om uitvoering: een goede uitvoering van een slecht idee kan nog steeds succesvol zijn. Geen uitvoering van een goed idee niet. Goede ideeen zullen altijd op verschillende plaatsen door vele mensen worden verzonnen. Het verschil tussen een goed idee en een goede implementatie is uitvoering en het claimen van een succesvolle uitvoering waar men (ja, ook ik) is blijven steken in een goed idee, is prietpraat
Succes heeft vele vaders, mislukking is een wees. Zelden horen je mensen zeggen dat ze orkut, myspace, plurk, buzz of een andere dienst met potentieel die het niet heeft gehaald hebben uitgevonden. Toch hebben ze het tijdens de opstart fase van plurk, myspace, orkut, buzz wel degelijk gezegd, maar de prietpraat verstomde.

Ik? Ik ga denk ik het internet maar eens uitvinden. To snel op een congres.

Score Ajax op Google Talk Guru

Ik ben groot fan van Vark.com, een website waar je vragen kan stellen aan mensen via instant messaging.

Het werkt voor mij, specifieke vragen die niet via Google zijn te vinden maar waar ik vertrouw op de kennis van experts, niet op de timeline van twitter.

Dus nu Google een automatische tool Google Talk Guru heeft om antwoorden te vinden, had ik redelijke hoge verwachtingen.

De eerste test laten echter zien dat de implementatie redelijk beperkt is. Google Talk Guru kent maar een paar basis commandos: "score, weather, define, translate, web". En dat kan ik ook prima via ene browser die ik waar ik in woon, jabber is slechts mijn voortuin :-) Na een tijdje gespeeld te hebben vond ik inderdaad dat de vijf basale commandos doen wat ze moeten, heb ik geen easter eggs kunnen vinden, maar ben er ook achter dat de kwaliteit bepaald niet op het niveau van "watson" (IBM) ligt; verre van. Al is dat zeker iets voor de toekomst en zal de vraag dan wellicht zelfs via voice ipv chat gesteld kunnen worden.

Niet heel erg onder de indruk dus . Hoewel:

Domainname fun. Zo oud als de browser is. Yep. Sorry voor al die Bas Achternaam mannen die denken dat b@sachterna.am hip is. Is het niet meer. Het was hip in in 1994 toen JWZ (the legend!) zijn .signature in mail kon voorzien van "about:jwz". Toen 99,9% van alle browsers Netscape was. En toen dus about:jwz in je Netscape browser je leide naar jwz.org. Yep, hoe is dat voor een tinyurl: about:jwz :-)

Vandaag zag ik op mijn twitter stream een tinyurl van het Algemeen Dagblad, de hostname was s van short, de FQDN dus s.ad.nl. Als ik DNS-meister daar was of in de business zou zitten, zou ik toch echt een letter meer hebben opgeofferd, go.ad.nl of zo. Ik bedoel s.ad? Niet heel erg slim.

Nu leent het domain ad.nl zich natuurlijk wel voor dergelijke grappen. En een kleine twitter oproep leide tot aardig wat grappen en grollen:

Jarig zijn anno 2010 (vandaag, dank :-)). Dat betekent 100+ tweets, 30 mail, 20 facebooks, 5 telefoontjes (mama, zussen, schoonouders) en .... en echt typo domain!

Jawel, via twitter om 00:00h van Sebastiaan een echt heus stoer typo domain; http://bertboerladn.nl/. En natuurlijk het juiste domain naar het typo domain, http://bertboerland.nl/ :-). Inclusief zeer 2010 spel ... :-) (met uitslag naar twitter). Dank!

I always think it is funny to see a "a A /|" (bigger text selections) on a website. The decision to use this is always made by people who are not visually handicapped and think adding this to a website has anything to do with accessibility.

Blind people are blind on every website and use a braille browser, people with bad eyes are handicapped on every website and have a [control][plus] key combination in their browser. Mirroring browser functionality in the site is in fact a bad thing. Adding the "bigger text" buttons in a website does nothing for accessibility.

I always think it is funny to see a discussion about adding ZIP files on a website instead of a tarball. The decision to add this fileformat is always made by people who do not have a windows machine and and think adding this to a website has anything to do with gaining market-share.

Developers using windows are developers on all projects they work on and have a third party tool to unpack a tarball, people with interest in Drupal but no able to unpack a tarball can be pointed to a simple helptext. Solving problems with technology when it can be dealt with procedures is always a bad thing. Adding a zip distribution does nothing for marketshare but a lot for maintance costs.

Not that I consider windows users to be handicapped... Not at all... :-)

You are looking at Drupal's next release, with the internal name D7A4. It was found lost in a bar in Antwerp, Belgium. Camouflaged to look like an ordinary Drupal 6 on an USB stick. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing, and here are all the details.

While Drupal may tinker with the final packaging and design of the award winning CMS, it's clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation Drupal version is drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here's the detailed list of our findings:

What's changed

Color module now usable by themes other than Garland.

How it was lost

Dries Buytaert—a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering graduate of the University of Ghent and talented amateur photographer—is a Drupal Software Engineer working on the core Drupal Software, the little program that enables communities to florish. A dream job for a talented engineer like Buytaert, a PHP fan who always wanted to meet Rasmus Lerdorf.
On the night of April 27, he was enjoying the fine local ales at a pub, a nice Belgian beer garden, in Antwerp. He was happy. The place was great. The beer was excellent. "I underestimated how good Belgian beer is," he blogged on his next-generation CMS he was testing on the field, cleverly disguised. It was his last blog post update on the secret Drupal version. It was the last time he ever saw the USB stick, right before he abandoned it on bar stool, leaving to go home.

The Aftermath

Weeks later, Boerland.com got it for $5,000 in cash. At the time, we didn't know if it was the real thing or not. It didn't even get past the Druplicon installer screen. Once we saw it inside and out, however, there was no doubt about it. It was the real thing, so we started to work on documenting it before returning it to Buytaert. We had the software, but we didn't know the owner. Later, we learnt about this story, but we didn't know for sure it was Buytaert's USB stick until today, when we contacted him via his phone.

Bert Boerland: Is this Dries?
Dries Buytaert: Yeah.
B: Hi, this is Bert Boerland from boerland.com.
D: Hey!
B: You work at Drupal software, right?
D: Um, I mean I can't really talk too much right now.
B: I understand. We have a device, and we think that maybe you misplaced it at a bar, and we would like to give it back.
D: Yeah, I forwarded your email [asking him if it was his USB stick], someone should be contacting you.
B: OK.
D: Can I send this phone number along?
B: [Contact information]

He sounded tired and broken. But at least he's alive, and apparently may still be working with Drupal software—as he should be. After all, it's just a stupid USB stick and mistakes can happen to everyone. The only real mistake would be to fire Dries in the name of Drupal's legendary impenetrable security, breached by the power of Belgian beer and one single human error.

What does it mean for you

After consulting our lawyers, we decided to test the next version o this Drupal CMS and to offer a free download link so you can enjoy the works of this Drupal engineer as well. This so you can get familiar with the new slick industrial interface and the new API's. We higly encourage you to download the software and help test drive it.

Drup dot al

Every day or so I try to browse so modules that might be of use for customers. Not that my team is afraid of building own modules. Not at all as the Hansel module for example shows. A rather cool module for developers to make better breadcrumbs that we build for the NCRV.nl and was donated by them. Not afraid to make own modules that make "awesomeness happen". But using Open Source means building on the shoulders of giants and no matter how tall you are, there is always someone taller then you. So despite being 2 meters tall, I always look for smarter people writing interesting code/functionality.

So the other day I came across the Drupal anywhere module that uses twitters anywhere service. Anyway, clicking the demo link brought me to... drup.al!

And this is what I wrote about that domain-name back in 2006:

If Drupal would have started in 2005 and Albania would have had a real NIC, we wouldnt have claimed drupal.org but drup.al.

But we arent followers, not here to be hip and we were twodotooo before Tim could spell it out. So we are Drupal.org, rocking without being Beta Two Dot Oooh!

And I still think it is true today. Even if Time gave an excellent keynote at DrupalCon SF. Drup.al is a funny domain-name. Demoing a nice module, that is all it is. And when the Albanian NIC was any more open back in 2001 when I registered drupal.org I am sure I would have looked at drup.al as well. Nice domain name, but search engines are the new DNS, Google is the new Bind. Funny name, drup.al. But most outsiders already think that the name Drupal by itself is funny enough.

Opvallend dat juist een gemeente met de naam "Oss" haar website draait op een ouderwets closed source systeem in plaats van op OSS :-)
