I have tried multiple tools to "Get Things Done" (wiki). n teh end I just use mindmapping, since it is form me the most logical way to order items.

I started out with >MindNode, lots of eyecandey yet low on useful features. Then I went back to the Open Source FreeMind that I have been using for years. And it worked fine for me! But I still learn from pronovix!

Dode bomen, kranten en hun websites, deel 1

Ik wil al zolang een groot artikel schrijven over media, papier en websites maar wordt steeds ingehaald door de werkelijkheid, daarom schrijf ik maar een aantal kortere postings, hier de eerste uit de serie "dode bomen"

Een hele mooie domme quote van de hoofdredacteur van de NRC. Te vinden op de NRC site, inloggen noodzakelijk. Maar dat is de walled garden fout waar ik nu niet op zal ingaan. De slogan is hilarisch, "Het verschil tussen papier en internet is veel kleiner dan vaak wordt voorgesteld"

Omdat mensen bij kranten denken dat papier en internet het zelfde zijn, hebben we "papieren krantensites". Juist deze houding maakt duidelijk dat men uitgaat van de content ("artikel") en het medium ("papier", "internet") de content volgt. Juist deze houding maakt duidelijk dat men niets van het medium Internet -en waarschijnlijk alle media anders dan papier- begrijpt. Juist deze houding maakt pijnlijk duidelijk waarom we papieren websites hebben.

Het is de klassieke fout om te denken dat Internet alleen maar snel papier is. De klassieke fout van Form follows function . Dat is een drog redenatie.

Frank Lloyd Wright begreep dat je vorm en functie niet zo kan scheiden, dat de schijn-correctheid om het te zeggen leidt tot zaken die niet in balans zijn. Immers:

Form follows function - that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.

Vorm en functie horen /een/ te zijn, samen in harmonie. Dus en medium als internet heeft andere mogelijkheden en beperkingen dan papier. En het feit dat men denk dat "het verschil wel mee valt" maakt dus dat we papieren websites hebben in Nederland.

In Nederland kan je op de meeste kranten geen commentaar achter laten, anders dan een oneliner, geen threaded replies, geen single sign on over de verschillende sites heen, geen creatief gebruik van infographics. Laat staan dat de kranten in Nederland hun data via API's bschikbaar stellen. Het mooiste voorbeeld dat de krant niet zo heel veel van internet begrijpt is de "print deze pagina" knop die in elke krantensite zit en "

mail this to a friend" is niet heel veel beter.

Een print knop op een pagina is twee keer dom. De knop is overbodig. Een gebruiker weet echt wel hoe je een pagina moet printen met /file/print. Men probeert browser functionaliteit in de site te stoppen en dat is een domme fout. Maar de tweede reden dat dit niet goed is, is substantiëler. Men bouwt in vorm en functie websites die uit te printen zijn en beschouwd internet dus als snel papier.

Maar het internet is geen snel papier. En een van de weinige kranten die weet dat papier anders is dan internet, is de NY Times. Deze partij is in extreme mate aan het inzetten op de online activiteit. Met bijna wekelijks nieuwe online diensten, API's en zeer coole mashups. Neem bijvoorbeeld vizlab waar je tal van visueel aantrekkelijke interactieve vormen van data kan zien. De krant is goed in data, IBM goed in visualisatie met many-eyes. En de visie bij de NY Times -anders dan bij NRC- is dat het internet anders is dan papier.

Maar nee, in Nederland hebben we bloated wesites. Sites die je kan afdrukken op papier en dan enkel de bewegende irritante reclame "mist". Site die je gemaild kan krijgen of op kan abonneren in PDF vorm. Dus in Nederland heeft Birgit gelijk, Internet en papier zijn bijna het zelfde. En als de dode bomen vallen nemen ze hun online activiteiten dus mee. Daar kunnen we op wachten, of de dode bomen gaan media behandelen zoals het hoort. Papier wekelijks voor een magazine, "vaste browser" voor breaking news gepersonaliseerd in tijd en plaats en mobiel internet voor location based services.

We wachten, dode bomen vallen om of veranderen. We zullen zien, Birgit.

Werknemer 2.0 .. gaap

Gaap. We gaan nog even door met twee punt nul en de ergernissen. De paarse truien op VROM zijn ook hip dus nu hebben we nu ook "de Werknemer 2.0"... Wat een armoede.

Maar goed, VROM had de armoede en het geld te veel dus liet een flash game ontwikkelen zodat we ons zelf kunnen testen hoe twee punt nul we zijn. Leuk hoor. En ook erg goed. Volgens de game moet je antwoorden op spam dat je niet geïnteresseerd bent ("unsubscribe me").. By thor. Vooral doen! En vergaderen en VOIP betekent Skype. Jaja, dit is de overheid die de weg wijst op het open internet. Lieve vragenmaker van de game, Skype is geen slecht pakket -(*ahum* bloatware on windows) maar het lijkt me gezonder om als overheid het begrip "VOIP" en de implementatie "SIP te promoten ipv een silo tool als twee punt nul te beschouwen

Iedereen gebruikt natuurlijk Windows XP, Outlook en MSN. Want fat proprietary clients, da's zo twee punt nul.

Ook zoiets, los van wat de vraag is ("pojectdocumentatie bijhouden") het antwoord is twee punt nul, in dit geval dus een wiki pagina beginnen. Op en of andere manier is het ook gewoon bij de overheid om in de source een kiekeboe advertentie van de bouwer te plaatsen.

Vind dan niemand dit echt doorgespoeld geld? Echt, een website van enkele 10-duizenden euros die niet volgens de eigen standaarden van de Overheid gebouwd is, niet toegankelijk is voor blinden ("beperkingen is zo 1.0") om het file probleem via een spelletje op te lossen?

Drupal, Redhat/Ubuntu, Acquia

When Dries (co)started his company he made sure not to step on any of the those of the community and the commercial ecosystem around Drupal. Dries stated he wanted to play it nice and offer commercial services around Drupal that would be good for Drupal, for the community, the Drupal companies that already offer (implementation/testing/education) services as well as for his investors and himself. The last two I wrote down myself but it only makes sense to add them as well

Dries stated in his initial post that Acquia should be:

[...] a company that is to Drupal what Ubuntu or RedHat are to Linux.

So far, Dries and his team at Acquia have done a great job! Adding value to the code, the community and even generating opportunities for other Drupal Shops without claiming any ground where others are offering service. Acquia created their own business opportunities, something we all profit from.

One year and 2 weeks after the initial announcement (late congrats!), Acquia is more then the Ubuntu/RedHat of Drupal! Acquia is the Acquia of Drupal. And you can see this if others are referring to you like:

just as Red Hat does for the open-source Linux operating system and [...] Acquia does for the open-source Drupal content management system.

And lets not forget, is is more then anything else a compliment to the Drupal community, becomming a household name like Linux is (in some households anyway )

Now if only we would be more proud on our mascot.

DrupalCon DC, one of the best CSS sites of 2008

Over at webdesignerwall you can find the best CSS sites for 2008. And sure enough, the incredible retro pixel art DC 2009 site is listed there amongst some other great sites. Well deserved, one of the best designed Drupal sites out there and for sure the best DrupalCon site for the next year. Kudos developmentseed!

Oude media. Ze gaan gewon door met het drukken, blijven denken in papier en inkt, internet als hobby zien, denken dat "de krant zakt", journalisten stukjes "uitteipen op de teipmachine" die e opsturen naar de internet redactie.

Intussen heeft de NYTimes het moeilijk, PC mag komt enkel online uit, maar het orkest gaat gewon door.

Mijn voorspelling: een grote krant van Nederland gaat omvallen in 2009 of 2010. Dus stop de persen.

You see, the Netherlands LOVE Drupal and that is why we are trying to bring this love in the form of a DrupalCon to Maastricht in 2009. Be sure to checkout one of the floor plans as well.

Note: It has not been decided yet where the next DrupalCon in the EU will be held. If you feel like organising the DrupalCon 2009 in another town, please see the guidelines of the Drupal Association and get a passionate group together to tender!

An echo from the blast of the past

Johan Janssens -the Most Valuable Person in the Joomla community- has an article on his corporate blog about a presentation he held more then 3 years ago on the second DrupalCon in Amsterdam.

When I met him a a month ago, he challenged me to recall what his message was. And I was sad to say I didn't knew anymore. Looking back at his slides a couple of thing are clear:

The first thing to notice is Johan was very optimistic in his roadmap. Clearly not all his goals -numbering issues apart- have not been met by the Joomla! community. By the end of 2006, Joomla! wasn't a full blown WAF like Symfony for example is. However, things Johan did not anticipate did happen; Joomla! is clearly one of the best well known CMS-es with a very very big audience! Please note that his presentation was only month after Joomla! was founded ("forked"?) so it is only logical that his goals were optimistic.

The second thing to note is that Drupal and Joomla! still think of each other -mostly and by most- as rivals. And while I did do some sessions on building bridges between both systems, I am very guilty on placing Drupal on top of Joomla!

This while we have the same problems and could (re)use each others solutions. To name a few problems that are generic for both of us and where we can learn from each other.

Now lets try to differentiate while learning from each other. Learn from each other how to deal with GPL violations, learn setting up local "associations", leanr and share patching exploits and learn to love.

Note: During a recent session I had with Johan, the question was asked what I think Drupal could learn from Joomla. I answered "marketing". And Johan was amazed since he wanted to give the same answer on what Joomla! could learn from Drupal. One year ago, Joomla! was clearly in the lead when it came down to market the product. However, since one year, I think Drupal has better press then Joomla!, so we were both right.

Promote Drupal On Google

Now you can make the results of Google queries more or less "personalized" via a "promote" and "remove" icon, you might want to help keep Drupal on op. It is already one of the best CMS-es codewise, for sure the best CMS communitywise, and now lets strengthen our position in Google by "en masse" promoting Drupal (with keywords like Drupal and CMS). Only 13 people have done this so far, lets make this a 1000!

Note: Google claims that your actions will not influence other peoples results, but I can not imagine that Google will not use all the rich meta data that users add to the results.

Dutch political party Groenlinks on Drupal

Recently I saw that the Groenlinks.nl site is running Drupal. Grenlinks (greenleft, (wiki-entry) is a left winged political party in the Netherlands. GroenLinks is the party behind the Motie Vendrk (Dutch) that states that if an Open Source en proprietary product are equally good, the government has to choose the Open Source product.(Yes, we have to make Open Source products /worse/ to get picked above proprietary software ).

By itself, the site GroenLinks is not big and does not need to be mentioned here for running Drupal. However, it is a good sign. A good sign since most semi-public bodies in the Netherlands choose local CMS-es up to now. There is not a country in the world with so many CMS-es as the Netherlands (Trideon, Smartsite, Greenvalley, MMBase etc). "Koop Nederlandse Waar" ("Buy Dutch Products") seems to be the mantra. While Content Management problems are the same all over the world, with I18N and RTL as a bonus.

So it is good to see that GroenLinks is choosing for a global answer for addressing a local problem, Drupal as the CMS of choice!

And from what I see in the market, this is only the start. A lot more Dutch sites need to be upgraded, exciting times ahead and an ideal place for the next DrupalCon?

Spreadthunderbird.co Drupal site

Spreadthunderbird.com is a new sister site of
spreadfirefox.com to promote the mail client Thunderbird. Both are Drupal sites, spreadfirefox for ages, spreadthunderbird as of today. A nice clean design and a nice opensource product as well!
