How many RSS readers do you have?

The other day -based upon some twitter messages I was doing with some friends- I thought about how many RSS readers I have for my frontpage. I didnt feel like investigating /all/ possible RSS readers since every taxonomy item in Drupal (the CMS under this site) is a RSS feed and since since only very few people are subscribed to these feeds; most follow the frontpage.

The problems with RSS readers is that big aggegator sites get the RSS feed on behalf of multiple people, just counting readers does not do the job. Fortunately, bigger sites mention how many people are reading the feed, like this in the headers:

The other problem is that I have three RSS feed URL's for one and the same feed:

/myblog/atom/feed

/myblog/node/feed

/myblog/rss.xml

So I run the following code on an access log of half a day:

(note: Most RSS readers grab the feed muliple times per day. I dont count them via the onliners above and having only half a day of sampling data is not that bad)

Then count the "on behalf of xxx subscribers" by hand and...

I couldn't believe it, in half a day I have some 554 subscribers! Wowsers!

Downloadgeneratie 2.0

Frankmeeuwsen zei dat hij een stukje van de NRC over "downloadgeneratie" in een keer kon vinden in google als eerste hit op twitter:

ging ik de uitdaging aan.

aan de hand van iemand die gisteren googlede naar downloadgeneratie

en poste zelf een stuk over de downloadgeneratie op mijn site.

Zou ik het winnen? Zou ik met mijn blog entry boven die van de NRC komen? Drupal -het CMS onder deze site- is super SEO dus na een dag stond ik al op de 4de plaats. En vandaag even kijken en wat blijkt? Op google.COM sta ik nu op nummer 1. Eet je hart uit NRC en het CMS dat er onder ligt.

En de title? Downloadgeneratie 2.0? Wel dat is een mooie naam die de huidige download generatie aan de volgende generatie kan geven. Een download generatie die niet enkel download maar ook weet wat de juridische gevolgen zijn, gebruik maakt van torrents maar wel CC licenties in acht neemt. Maar dat is voor later.

Intellectueel Eigendom in blog land. Complexe materie.. Een zaak waar je als leek in feite niet mee moet bemoeien als mag je natuurlijk een mening hebben. Meningen heb ik genoeg dus laat ik mijn duit in het zakje doen over een recente zaak die in de Nederlandse blogosphere haar kop op stak.

Marketingfacts heeft een stukje over een Nederlandse weblogger Cinner die een stuk integraal had over genomen van de NRC. Vervolgens zou een bedrijf in opdracht van de auteur haar "beboet" hebben met 500 Euro. Zie een aantal postings in deze van de originele blogger hier.

Ik heb er niet bij stil gestaan - en vele webloggers met mij denk ik - dat het hier een schending betrof.

Dit is typerend voor de huidige generatie. CD’s koop je niet maar download je en mensen denken dat dit legaal is. Ja het downloaden wellicht wel maar het bezit niet. En teksten schrijf je wel maar je gebruikt de kracht van een ander om het beter te maken. Typerend, niet goed of slecht perse. Maar wel typerend. We leven in een tijd waarin iedereen denkt of vindt dat informatie vrij moet zijn. Maar voornamelijk informatie van anderen, als je eigen postings ergens anders staan vindt men het wel een schande en staat de blogoshere op zijn kop. "Unilever gebruikt een CC not for commercial use foto van Flick in haar reclame campagne!" is een headline die eenvoudig op honderden blogs zou kunnen eindigen. Copyright wel voor "ons" maar niet voor "hun". Het feit dat je online eenvoudig hergebruik kan maken van de content van een ander maakt niet dat je het ook mag!

Intellectueel Eigendom in blog land. Complexe materie. In de blog posting van zowel about blank als het doorgaans zeer goede marketingfacts wordt gemeld dat de weblogger beboet is. Vanzelfsprekend is er maar een autoriteit die boetes kan uit delen, de rechtelijke macht. Niet een bedrijf als cozzmoss met een zwaar heersende FRAMES webiste in 2007. Cozzmoss kan natuurlijk wel eisen dat een stuk wordt weggehaald. ALS ze rechthebbende is of een rechthebbende vertegenwoordigd. Strik genomen kan ze het altijd eisen maar dat is nietig of vernietigbaar. En als ik het stuk op cinner goed lees, was Cozzmoss die de schrijver van het stuk uit de NRC vertegenwoordigde, niet PcM of NRC zelf. Dit is het eerste opmerkelijke feit. Het kan zijn dat de situatiue veranderd is, maar tot voor kort wouden de kranten van PcM altijd eigenaar zijn van de stukjes die in de krant staan, ook de stukjes van freelanchers, ook voor media anders dan de dode bomen ("krant") variant. Daar is vroeger een redelijke grote rechtzaak over geweest waar PcM liever niet meer aan herinnerd wordt en online probeert te wissen (zie ook mijn blog posting over PcM censureert haar eigen wikiperia lemma).

Stel dat het bedrijf in kwestie (het zwaar achterlijke cozzmoss) acteert namens de auteur. Dan is het nog steeds zeer waarschijnlijk een leeg dreigement want die auteur is zeer waarschijnlijk helemaal geen eigenaar van het stukje maar de NRC/PcM is de eigenaar. Cozzmoss noch de auteur kunnen dus eisen dat een stuk wordt weggehaald, althans die kan is zeer groot!

Wie zit achter cozzmoss? De WHOIS database zegt:

Googlen naar Procez Deloranch levert niet veel op maar bladzijde2 is goed door te nemen. Een raar bedrijf van mevrouw Irene van den Berg. Een leek (freelanch schrijfster) met een zeer bedenkelijke manier van inkomsten deling en zwakke juridische basis. Als ik auteur was zou ik zeker niet met haar in zee gaan.

Er was geen mailtje van de auteur met het verzoek het artikel (wat diep in het archief zat en nooit meer werd opgevraagd) te verwijderen.

Een rare constatering. Voor de meeste webloggers geldt dat 90% van het bezoek van een search engine komt en niet naar de voorpagina gaat maar naar het archief. Tenzij enkel je moeder, je oma en een geheime aanbidder je voorpagina volgen en je CMS niet de mogelijkheid heeft om permalinks te gebruiken en data van goede metadata te voorzien. "Ver weggestopt” geldt voor offline publicaties, op pagina 10 staat minder belangrijk nieuws dan op pagina een. Maar het geldt niet online, zeker niet voor weblogs.

Laten we de zaak nog eens ingewikkelder maken. Stel dat de weblogger in kwestie niet het artikel manueel had gekopieerd maar via een RSS feed geautomatiseerd had ingelezen van de NRC site. En stel dat de NRC een full nieuwsfeed zou geven en niet slechts een teaser (ankeiler in oud uitgeversland genoemd). En stel dat de RSS feed lezer die op de website van de blogger zou staan niet zou "purgen" maar alle artikelen uit de feed zou opslaan in "het archief". Zou het dan nog steeds een copyright schending zijn? Enkel de techniek is anders (RSS versus HTML) en de manier van importeren (automatisch versus manueel bewust). Ik ben benieuwd wat een rechter daarvan zou vinden.

Webloggers die schrijven over webloggers –en dat ben ik ook- hebben te weinig kennis van deze materie. Woorden als "boete", "verweggestopt in het archief" zijn zinloos
Het is maar de vraag of het dubieuze bedrijf Cozzmoss de rechthebbende vertegenwoordigt
We kunnen als blogoshere allemaal het artikel in kwestie een op een plaatsen op onze blog. Kijken wat er dan gaat beuren? Wat zijn uw gedachten in deze?

Ik heb heb de laatste tijd relatief veel geschreven over mijn werkgever en mijn werkgever zoekt nieuwe medewerkers. Logisch dus dat er wat ads Getronics-PinkRoccade via adsense op mijn site stonden. Het is bekend dat ik een echte spellinggod ben, dus ik ben prima op zijn plek bij een werkgever dat de verschil tussen die en dat niet kan.

Wikipedia, Youtube, reliability and Willy

Do you think that Wikipedia is reliable? You dont and you shouldnt. Just like any other medium, Wikipedia isnt reliable per se. But it is often "good enough" and if it is not, you can maker it better yourself. And someone did in the YouTube entry on wikipedia:

And guess where note [33] is going? Indeed, to the quality posting of friend Mikew; youtube bandwidth usage 25 petabytes per month.

Strange to see. But I know for sure that Mike Wessling is of of the coolest people in the industry, good one MikeW!

Frans Alkemade goes ego commenting

Regular readers of Willy might know that I have some history with Frans Alkemade. First he made a website that was full of Java nonsense promo talk while the product he was promoting was in fact Drupal (a leading PHP CMS). When the community found out about it, he quickly cleaned the site and claimed that a student has placed the text on the site without his knowledge. Then it came to my attention that he is selling Drupal as his Strategic Website violating the GPL. Then we found out that he copied the text from the Drupal handbook that is cc licensed (all he had to do it give a link) and when we found out he deleted all the entries (hence lots of dead pages at his site.

Now let me make it clear, I am fine with people making money, I know I make ~~a lot~~ enough. I am fine with people making money from open source products, it is the best way to make progress and make money. I even like the "Cathedral in the Bazaar" way of making money (for example: dual licensing a product). I don’t care, as long as people stick to the rules we made. I like it better when the people are aligned to the open source project as well, but that is not necessarily for making money in the Bazaar.

I am not on a crusade against this Frans Alkemade, I never met him and probably never will. He might be a nice person, I don’t know. But I do know that his track record is showing that he is using the GPL code and the CC text in a way that is prohibited and in a way I don’t like.

So if you Google for Frans Alkemade you will find lots of posting, most likely my postings first. Frans is smart enough to know the impact of Google searches on a person and on a persons business, so there are some very positive stories out there on the net written by his "customers".

Really, I have lots of customers, and some even like me . But never do they like me enough to write out of the blue a love letter on the net about me. They might drop a comment on my LinkedIn profile, the might send me a "thank you" mail. But never do they blog about me out of the blue.

The "customers" of Frans however do. They love him to pieces.

See for example HIS blog at blogspot where "John Franklin" writes a love story about Frans.

Frans Alkemade was fantastic to work with. He showed me many of his demo sites as well as his client sites. What he showed me was many different types of open source solutions that his company utilized, then customized to fit my needs.

Lange tijd geleden schreef vrind MikeW een stukje over zijn business plan: indien zijn eigen bedrijf niet zou lopen, zou hij een nier in de verkoop doen. Grappig geschreven en grappig bedoeld. Helaas zijn er elke dag tientallen mensen die de pagina bekijken en elke week is er wel een gek die zijn nier ter koop aan biedt, ondanks het feit dat ik net zo vaak zeg dat het een grap is en deze site niet sell-a-kidney.com is (now there is a business plan mike! )

Lees ik nu op nu.nl dat er "Hoge bedragen (worden betaald) in online nierenhandel". En erger... ZE HEBBEN ME GEVONDEN:

Op een Nederlandse internetsite zouden tenminste acht advertenties staan van mensen die bij leven één van hun nieren willen verkopen.

Aaagg. Deuren dicht, server uit, nieuwe naam en gezicht. De anti-nier-verkoop politie is after me!

Hoofdredacteur: Okay... Waarom nemen onze oplage cijfers af?
Marketingmeneer: Er is iets nieuws op het internet. Blogging of zo. Onze doelgroep schijnt zelf te schrijven en erger, blogs te lezen. In plaats van onze non-news krant te pakken
Hoofdredacteur: Tja... Weet je wat. We gaan adverteren...
in koor: ...op blogs! Geweldig idee
Hoofdredacteur: Je redt het verder wel he? Ik ga naar huis. Doe maar wat advertenties op die... "blogs".

En zo kwam het dat Computable deen advertentie plaatste op deze blog. Met de tekst "Freeware Linux". Ja. En dat voor een site/krantje dat over ICT gaat. Beste meneer (m/v) de hoofdredacteur en marketingmeneer (m/v). Leer aub even de GPL spellen, lees deze, begrijp deze. Linux is geen "freeware", Linux is open source, GPL(v2). De link van de ad ging naar de homepage van Computable. Even zoeken. En jawel, de marketeer in kwestie was lang geleden (16 oktober 1998) "journalist" en schreef: Oracle neemt freeware Linux eindelijk serieus

Recently I have seen a couple of weird comments on my site. Not that having weird comments on a weird blog is weird, I have lots of proof that the internet is full with people like me.

But now there are some odd comments on my site:

The first time this happened I published it (anonymous comments are queued on my site). But now it happend again and again. Poor spelling in a "All your base are belong to us" way. And complete off topic.

But google for "I'm not agree with you." and you will find that this comment has been posted on lots of sites. And more then that, all the sites where the comment is listed are Drupal sites!

Since the link in the posting is innocent (google.com) I see no direct spam related reason for mass dumping this comment. Unless...

I think there are people out there, that are mass posting this innocent looking comment targeting at Drupal sites. And after some time, they will google for where the comment is published. And then they know, where they can push their real spamrun to.

What you should do:

Check the source IP address of the comment, write it down, check who owns it and file a complaint at the provider. Some people think it is useless, I worked at a tier 2 ISP and we actually dropped customers that were abusing our IP space (but see below)
Unpublish the comment! Dont let google index that you publish this comment. It is mass "spam", bad grammer and not relevant so unpublish
Maybe even better: dont publish anonymous comment without approval. And be sure to read the Call for a Blogger's Code of Conduct

Regarding the first point, all my spam comments came from 87.230.18.23. When I visited this IP http://87.230.18.23/ I saw it was a node in the tor network, "Tor is used to anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications using the TCP protocol. I still filed an abuse report at abuse-mailbox: net-abuse @ hosteurope.de but since they host a tor site I dont think it will make a difference.

I hope people will act upon this posting, even if "you is not agreeing with me, otherwise you is sorry."

When I was still a student, I once got home so drunk that it seemed like a fun thing to do to hide my glasses from myself, so I could find them "the next day". Needless to say it was already, "the next day".

So when I woke up I could see my glasses nor could see anything at all, I was getting "pissed" at myself. It took me 3 days to find them, hidden in the freezer...
