IMHO factoryjoe is one of the most creative and productive people in the OSS industry. He was the man behind SFW, created the NYT add, used to work for flock, created zillions of cool tshirt designs, organised barcamps, helped out on civicspacelabs, worked for Mozilla and did a lot of other stuff for Drupal. I met him once shortly, and he is indeed a nice smart bloke. So far sucking up.
I once had a customer how had lots of geographical data. They created their own GIS and plotted that data. The development of the GIS costed a couple of 100k's. Then somehow someone plotted the same geographical data on Google maps. And boom! Better userinterface, cool navigation, no software development, no maintenance cost. I always tell this stoy to sales. We always think of time to plot data. But the fact is that there is no data that doesnt have a geograhical component. So google earth might be just as suitable to plot data (any data) as a calender is. And combining those two axes, tiem and place, seems like the smartest thing to do.
Where is this story going? Take a look at this mockup from factoryjoe:

Now that IS smart! See his blog posting.
