SpikeSource, Drupal and Windows

SpikeSource made a pressrelease where they promoted their first "OSS for Windows "publication, Drupal: SpikeSource Announces Drupal SpikeIgnited Solution for Windows.

SpikeSource claims their version is a "Tested, Integrated and Certified Open Source Product for Windows". The news was also picked up by internetnews.com where they also state that Microsoft and Spikesource "today announced a partnership".

I dont care much for the OS War, I use windows, Linux and will be buying a Mac "real soon" now. But having a tested version of Drupal out for Windows will help to get more attention. Although I would advice anyone using it to run this on development systems and not on production servers. And with the rise of user friendly Linux distro's like Ubuntu why settle for anything less when you have the choice? On the other hand, LDAP and hence AD integration is not trivial for you average MCSE-Active Directory god, so when Spikesource makes this more easier, we can see a grow of the use of Drupal for intranets in the SoHo markte:

"There are also interoperability issues, such as single sign-on. We needed to make adjustments to work well with ActiveDirectory instead of OpenLDAP, for example."

Sure enough internetnews mentions the "235 Microsoft FUD patents" again and that:

The partnership with SpikeSource does not include any Microsoft indemnification

Bite me!

The funny thing is, the day they wrote the pressrelease about their release based on 5.1, Drupal 5.2 was released. The problem with bundling, testing and certification of OSS projects is that you potentially loose your "agility" to quickly patch though most enterprises dont mind. Their Drupal page. still list 5.1 and has a small type ("Druapl"). But I dont complain...

Good find, Bert, thanks!

I run Drupal on a Windows 2003 Server. Big deal! Truth be known, credit goes to Apache, PHP and MySQL. I also run Joomla!, WordPress, MediaWiki, phpBB3, Moodle, JasperServer, Tomcat, and on and on...

Having said that, keep watching SpikeSource. They are bringing open source software to very conservative, Microsoft entrenched US enterprise market instead of expecting the enterprise adapt for open source. Smart.

By recognizing the enormous investment of knowledge already on the Windows platform *and* the fact that the enterprise *does* wants to get involved in FOSS, SpikeSource is trading experience and services for cash and starting to guide the corporate world in.
