this poll was made after Rasmus suggested that Drupal should "drop" PHP4 support. Rasmus of cource wants to get forward and as long as "big" PHP users like Joomla1/Drupal still support PHP4, the adoption of newer versions will stall.

Some very good stats are available here regarding PHP4 and 5.

An argument for PHP 5

How quickly to move up the version numbers with PHP and MySQL isn't an easy question to answer is it? I know many of us are constrained by what hosting companies have to offer or if we're running other other less up to date applications on the server. A while back I blogged about Wordpress dropping MySQL 3.23 support and even Dries felt compelled to reply on the post.

I just moved all my Drupal sites that I host to PHP 5.2.x and I'm happy to say I haven't had a single problem. I wish I can say that for all my applications which is why many host providers are reluctant to drop PHP 4.x from their servers. Though dropping PHP 4.x might just be the thing to give users the incentive to chip in and help their open source communities with updating their code...

Can I vote 43 time please?

From the 43 sites I maintain, only one runs on a server with PHP 5X. I think this poll is not very representative, for it will be mostly the bulk-hosters, hosting tens of thousands of Drupal sites that still use PHP4.

moving up

I am currently on 4 but have plans to go to 5 shortly as I already have two things I want/need that will only run on php5

PHP 5

Hello all, I am the one who asked this question at oscms. I believe that if Drupal makes a decision to drop PHP4 support starting with a particular release, then it will help to pull this segment of users onto PHP5. If, for instance, Drupal 6 was only to support PHP5, any one on a host that only supports PHP4 would need to go looking for a host that offers this. If hosts see enough people jumping ship, maybe they will start to support PHP5 as well. I think as the application developers we should be driving this issue rather than letting the hosting companies decide for us. I know that when I was seeking a hosting provider, I found several "cheap" options that support PHP5, so this should not be an issue.

Keep Pace with Debian Stable

I've just got a new server running Debian Etch (it's got to go stable _sometime_) with PHP5, and any new sites I set up or old sites I substantially modify end up there.

I don't think you can afford to get out of sync with Debian stable (which means supporting PHP4 for at least Drupal 6). It's probably the most conservative of the major distros used by hosting services, so it's a reasonable yardstick for how fast you can move without alienating a large chunk of your user base.

I think dropping support for PHP4 any time soon would oblige Drupal (and module maintainers) to keep supporting older, PHP4-compatible, versions of Drupal for longer - which may not be a bad thing anyway. Drupal 4.6, while unsupported, is not even two years old, and while web developers might see the value in upgrading, our clients may see the loss of security support after less than two years as a protection racket beyond even Microsoft's wildest dreams.

Sorry. I'm not agree with you.
