Why itunes on windows is possible the worst application I have seen

I own an iPod. Proudly. Not to be hip or wear white headphones because I dont. I use it primarily for in my car. In combination with the iTrip Nano from Griffin, I use it to listen to my MP3's and podcasts. "Look ma, no headphones". And I like my iPod a lot, in fact one wonders why not every remote control (for TV or radio/cd) does have the userinterface of the iPod.

I wish I could say the same about iTunes; the application to sync your playlists, photo's and podcasts with your iPod. But I cant! It must be the worst Big Application I have seen on Windows, ever! It is wrong in so many ways I cant even sum them up all but let me try to give some points why iTunes sucks:

  1. Crash. I work in a datacentre where lot of sensitive data (think all governmental data of all the inhabitants of The Netherlands are stored but also the root certificate of the Dutch state and via a special operations network ways to maintain dozen of applications and hosts including the biggest media sites in the Netherlands). So we have to lock our workspace when we are not at our desk. That and the fact that if you dont, your cow-workers will put "special images" as your background, send out mail to people via your account or do a software rotate on your desktop and disable the ability to undo this via a shortcut. So I lock my desktop. But if iTunes is fullscreen-ed when locking... it crashes. Badly! why? I dont know but it sucks.
  2. Userinterface. I understand that for Apple the iPod is the best way to push Mac's to windows users so they can switch. So they want to have their imago ("the aqua theme" look). But forcing this apple look including close buttons and other user interface elements on every Windows user sucks. You should never ever change the way the user knows how to work with his system. Only very immature applications mimic other UI's, all applications that respect the user more then the will of the vendor, will use the UI the user has chosen, not the vendor of the application. This is really a big usability booboo and Apple should know better!
  3. Syncing with local storage. This is the most stupidest thing I have seen. You can select a directory with MP3's to be indexed and everything is voodoo magic from there, great for the users, right? Wrong! I had some 40GB's of MP3's locally on my laptop and iTunes indexed it fine. But then I decided to use a central Samba repository for my MP3's; a server at home so I can sync with other PC's as well and use the MP3's as well for my Squeezebox. Believe it or not, you can ADD other directorys to be indexed, but you cant (CANT!) DELETE a directory to be indexed! The only solution is to delete the directory from the filesystem and start from scratch. I did. Now iTunes has all the MP3's listed twice and hence iTunes cant find half of the songs. You *can* tell iTunes PER SONG where it can be found if the file has been moved. But you honestly expect me to point 40GB's of MP3's manually to the new directory? Boy, is this how all Apple software's logic work? Because if that is the case, I'll rather switch to Ubuntu then to some braindead OS.
  4. iTunes account. iTunes has some kind of internal browser to browse the iTunes store. It is just HTML flying around, including GET's and POST's. And if you want to buy songs or games (hey, testris on iPod seemed cool!), or get some album covers, you need an iTunes account, the .Mac people have this by default. But not the Windows losers.. So you would think you can create an iTunes account in the iTunes application for the iTunes store, right? Wrong! When you use a function that requires an iTunes account, you are not directed to a page where you can create one, there is not browser starting pointing you to the iTunes site, there is no useful error. No, you get a "create an iTunes account on the Apple site" error. Ooooh, how helpful, thank you for that. Now I dare you, count the mouseclicks it takes you to find the place where you can create an iTunes account. I am rather Google savvy, but I spend more then a couple of minutes finding the place. .... Found it yet? ...... Honest, every music piece is within reach with 4 iPod clicks, but creating an iTunes account will be at least 10 times as many clicks, wasnt it?
And this is just a start, I can go on and on. iTunes on Windows as an application sucks, no matter how much "wet floor effects" they add to the userinterface.

But lets end this posting positive. My daughter Brecht loves the iPod, "waar is ipot nouw?" ("where is the ipod now?"). Especially since I use it as a remote control in combination with the iTrip for my stereo at home. See even "gets" the UI, the best way to test if the UI is good is to let it be used by a 2.5 years old. However, the first time I showed how to use the device, she said "waar is knopju nouw?" ("where is the button now?"). 2.5 years old and already legacy (missing button) in her head, that is weird. But also, 2.5 years old and the legacy (missing button) is whipped away in a second.

itunes

all of the above might have been true of the really early versions of itunes but it is not even close to true about the newer versions, it should be taken down it is bad publicity of apple, all of the things in itunes that is in this complaint are (and have been for a long time) fixed!!!

iTunes DOES SUCK BIG TIME

No please keep this post up here because I just downloaded itunes - latest I repeat latest and their every update is about 61 MB.. god bless me... and it sucks big time.
It can't monitor folders for new files and if you add again ... it creates duplicates all this sucks big time ... believe me big time.
I got an iphone and I wish it worked with Windows media or something but apple forces u to use their sucky application itunes which DOES SUCK BIG TIME. Apple should be sued for this.

Your an idiot. if you just

Your an idiot. if you just re-add the folder you wont get any double songs..

i bow for you

fractal FAIL!

BUZZZT! Wrong answer! Gots to LOVE the Apple fan bois. That is exactly what happens when you try to add a folder twice. I have a music colection that I have been growing since about 2000. It is quite large and new things are added to it every couple of days. Unlike WinAmp, iTurd doesn't bother to check for new files, so I have a choice, readd the entire directory, or search through 200+ GB of files and directories for the song or album I just ripped/downloaded/whatever. So I readd the directory and am left with doubles. Happens EVERY time and I have the newest version of iTunes.

WinAmp has been blowing away iTunes since.. well before there WAS iTunes. I have Mac friends who used to go on and on about iTunes.. then they found WinAmp and I have been busy installing CrossOver desktop and WinAmp every since.

iTunes blows. It can't be made better.. it is bloatware and is going the way of ICQ. The ONLY reason that it is even used, at all, is because Apple removes your ability to read a single file that is NOT covered by their IP (it is created dynamicly so the IP belongs to the user who created it, not Apple). Apple should put out an interface API and ditch the whole BS mess. The world would be a better place and iTunes can take it's correct place beside RealPlayer.

iTunes is purposefully

iTunes is purposefully bollocks for Windows. This is because Windows sucks. Get a Mac :)

That's an opinion.

That's an opinion. You can't say one system is "better" than any other. I prefer Windows, personally, and can't stand the Mac's UI, but that's MY personal opinion. I completely agree with you that they make iTunes for Windows suck on purpose, or maybe that they just don't care about making it any good.

But if this is some justification for Apple to say Macs are better then Apple is f***ing stupid. Why should I pay several thousand dollars to buy a computer that won't run my programs, that has a foreign UI, that I don't know how to program for, and that I can't customize?

No thanks. If that's what it takes to have an iPod, then I'll stick with my $800 custom built PC running Windows 7...

Agreed with the post

I have the latest iTunes version (v8) and it has all the problems from the post and many many more... it is indeed a "sucky" application. I hate it... syncing iTunes with iPhone is a mess... the weakest music manger software ever... ITUNES SUCKS!!!

I own both a mac Book Pro

I own both a mac Book Pro and a sweet IBM. Can't live without either. The Mac uses iTunes fine and I get what I want when I want. iTunes with WINDOWS SUCKS!!! I don't care what anybody say iTunes Sucks!! Yeh Windows Sucks but iTunes on Windows makes me wanna throw my ipod away and buy a cheap knock off!!

Love iPOD, hate iTunes (on

Love iPOD, hate iTunes (on windows), I want to add something and if I connect it next time the song or CD is not in the drive, its ok, don't panic, don't start deleting my songs PLEASE!! I just want to make it simple, add songs, then delete it when I want to...I don't want to create a playlist then synch it, I want to create a play list like I create a folder in a pen drive, then drag and drop my songs in there and then eject....viola!!! I absolutely hate the interface!

I totally agree, iTunes for

I totally agree, iTunes for Windows is complete crap.

itunes...

I TUNES IS UTTER GARBAGE. they will never fix it.. i honestly believe the people at apple are retarded... if you disagree with me.. then tell me why i cant replace the battery in my ipod.. without voiding the warranty... my cell phones battery went to shit after a year of heavy use... i popped off the back and put in a new battery... now thats genius a replaceable battery..

sorry apple... next mp3 player i get.... knock off ipod..
usb mass storage mode.... drag and dropped and none of your stupid drm..
id rather steal music than use drm... and im not gonna pay more so i can have a audio file without drm... F*** YOU APPLE...

Agree

Personally I like to read all the blog posts about what is wrong with iTunes every time I am waiting 4 hours for my iPhone to backup even though only 5-10% of the content has changed since the last backup. It just amazes me how much self promotion by apple actually convinces the general public that Apple tech is superior. Their Style sure, design sometimes (and mostly due to external companies like frog design inc. not apple engineers) but their tech and code is crap and always has been. Windows gets better with every version with apple the hype just gets deeper. Then again anything is better than a windows mobile device man those things suck.

I absoloutly hate the iTunes

I absoloutly hate the iTunes account and how it works. Its impossible to set up without jumping through hoops or waiting for a problem out of control to bypass. Also, on my iPod touch it is so annoying... Every other time i go to download an app or song. Somthing is wrong with my account verification or "my password is wrong" (i eventually find out i for some reason need to "review" my iTunes account which requires me to put my credit card info back in. Btw it doesnt expire for a few more years). I can say the same about the mail aplication on my iPod. Idk if im cursed or somthing but im constantly jumping thru hoops about it not being able to connect to yahoo and such. Please respond, anyone who agrees or disagrees

3 Years Later, iTunes still sucks

Found your blog while googling "iTunes hates Windows". I'm not a Windows fanboy, nor a Mac. I grew up with an Apple +, a Mac, build my first PC before Windows 3.11 came out. I dual boot with Linux and Windows 7 now. I try to use what works, and iTunes is seriously making me hate my iPod. Waiting for the next Cowon MP3 player, but I may just go ahead and get the S9 to replace my touch.

- no more 90MB iTunes updates
- no more duplicate imports
- no more library corruption when sunspots occur
- no more revenue feeding for Apple via iTunes
